In her first solo show in five years, Emily Leonard is showing a series of floral paintings at David Lusk Gallery. Lush and filled with layered, moody brushwork, the paintings are complex and beautiful at the same time, like the visual adaptation of a shoegaze pop song. “I want to get at the experience of being in your body in a place,” Leonard writes in her artist’s statement. “Rather than painting the tree in the yard, I want to paint what it feels like to stand in the yard and look at the tree.” The opening reception for Unfold is next week, Saturday, April 22, but you might want to get a look at these works early — these are the kinds of dreamy canvases collectors love to scoop up.
