weights and modules
OPENING: Saturday 10
Kit Reuther returns to David Lusk Gallery-Nashville for a second solo exhibition of paintings and sculptures. Weights and Modules features a new group of works completed in the past year that push Reuther’s signature minimalism to new heights.
Here, Reuther streamlines the distinct visual vocabulary she has cultivated over years of abstract painting and sculpting. Incorporating simpler forms and a restricted palette, Reuther hacks away at the inessentials and distills her compositions down to their most evocative elements.
In paintings like “Gray Arc” and “Triangle”, ominous forms are teased into the frame. We see only parts and portions of large, looming objects. Reuther uses a subtle hand to hint at things of gigantic proportion. By showing us only a sliver, we are allowed to imagine the rest.
Her steel and concrete sculptures explore the full range of space: vertical and horizontal, positive and negative, empty and full. Other works in subtly colored wood rise from bases like alien stalagmites or plants. In both, intrepid lines meet smooth planes, creating dense cubic and molecular forms that mirror both the natural and man-made worlds.
Reuther is a Nashville native who has exhibited across the United States and beyond. She has had some 27 solo shows, and has been involved in over 40 group exhibitions. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections.
